Today was a fun day! It was so gloriously nice outside (too bad they say it's not going to last...total bummer)! We took the kids to the park...you could tell they had major Spring fever! Landen ran and yelled in excitement the entire way there and the first glimpse they got of the playground...they were screaming with glee! It was too funny. After they played for a while, we came home...made some dinner...and then we made Homemade Play Dough. There's no greater activity to do with children if you'd like your kitchen full of flour, that's for sure! I told Emma that I had found a recipe for the play dough in one of my old teacher books...and it looked like a good one. I used to make play dough for my preschoolers, but it was always so gritty and it never lasted long. Well...I'm so pleased to say that I have mastered homemade play dough now! And Emma had a blast helping me make it...so did Landen (that's how my kitchen got full of flour)!
The ingredients....and mixing them together (don't worry...the stove burner isn't on yet!)

Emma loved to add all of the ingredients...and Landen liked to make messes!

Emma wanted green play dough...

The play dough...it had to cool and set for a little while...then they got to play!

So much fun!

This is by far the best play dough I've ever made or bought...yes...I personally think it beats the real "Play Doh"! Plus...the kids had fun making it! We're planning on making several more colors...we'll save that for a cold or rainy day though!
Want to make some too?
Here's the recipe...
Sift together & put in a saucepan:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 TB cream of tartar
Add to saucepan:
1-2 TB vegetable oil
1 cup of water (add food coloring to water)
A Few Drops of Vanilla Extract
Whisk together until smooth and thick. The mixture will be a little sticky until it cools. Place on wax paper to cool (about 30 minutes). Keep in an airtight container (deli containers work well). The play dough should keep for several weeks if kept in air tight container.
Have Fun!

I love the green--makes me think spring is just around the corner! Thanks for sharing your recipe too!
Thanks for the post. I also love to make homemade play dough. It lasts much longer then the store bought stuff. I think a got a nice couple of tips from you. I always added the food color after it was done, but it looks like if you add the color while it's cooking the play dough is a much brighter color. Also the vanilla is also a great idea.
Oh this looks like a great recipe, thanks so much for sharing. :o)
I think the homemade is more fun because my four year old loves helping me put the ingredients together. I think this will be our next rainy day project. Green is my favorite color too. It makes me think about all the grass and buds I hope to be seeing soon!
